Walmart competes directly with Amazon for the same shopping-agent traffic that is starting to browse and buy on people's behalf, which makes the front door of walmart.com worth checking closely. A site that a human can browse freely but a bot cannot is a different site entirely to an agent.

This report is partial: the scanner was blocked by Walmart's bot protection before it could evaluate most of the page. What did come through is mixed. robots.txt does not block crawlers, HTTPS redirects cleanly, and a sitemap is correctly referenced from robots.txt. But the homepage itself returned a bot-challenge page rather than real content, so content negotiation, structured data, meta hygiene, and readability could not be checked at all. There is also no agents.md, llms.txt, llms-full.txt, MCP server card, or .well-known/verified.md.

The scanner's note applies directly here: real AI agents likely get blocked the same way. Whatever Walmart's underlying page markup looks like, an agent arriving through a normal request path does not get far enough to see it.

What Walmart gets right

  • robots.txt does not block AI crawlers
  • Sitemap correctly referenced from robots.txt
  • Clean HTTPS with forced HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect

What is missing

  • Bot protection blocks the homepage itself: it returns a bot-challenge page instead of content, and real AI agents likely hit the same wall
  • No agents.md, llms.txt, or llms-full.txt: assistants have nothing to read about how walmart.com wants to be used
  • No MCP server card and no .well-known/verified.md: no way to interact with the site as a service, and no way to confirm it is authentic
  • No x402 payment signals detected
  • Content negotiation, structured data, meta hygiene, and readability could not even be evaluated, because the bot challenge stops the scan before it reaches the page
