OpenAI's products are a large part of why agent readiness is now a question every company has to answer. Its own homepage is one of the first places a curious agent, or a person asking an agent about OpenAI, would try to read. How that page performs is a useful signal for the rest of the industry watching what agent-friendly infrastructure is supposed to look like.

The scan found a homepage that passes the basics: HTTPS with a forced redirect, a reachable sitemap, full meta tags, and an open robots.txt. Past that, most of the agent-specific checks fail. There is no agents.md, no llms.txt, no llms-full.txt, and the homepage ignores requests for a markdown version of the page. No JSON-LD structured data was found at all. The text-to-markup ratio came in far below the readability threshold, and the scan flagged that key content only appears after JavaScript runs, meaning agents that do not execute scripts see a largely blank page.

For a company whose product is built on language models reading and reasoning over content, the irony is direct: an agent trying to read openai.com today gets less structured signal than it would from many far smaller sites.

What OpenAI gets right

  • Clean HTTPS with forced HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect
  • Reachable sitemap.xml
  • Full meta hygiene: title, description, and Open Graph tags present
  • robots.txt does not block AI crawlers

What is missing

  • No agents.md: assistants cannot read how openai.com wants to be used, so they cite competitors who declare themselves instead
  • No llms.txt or llms-full.txt: agents have to crawl page by page instead of reading one clean file
  • No structured data: no JSON-LD found anywhere on the homepage, so agents cannot reliably extract what OpenAI offers
  • No content negotiation: requesting markdown still returns raw HTML
  • Key content loads only after JavaScript runs: agents that do not execute scripts see a mostly blank page
  • Content readability far below threshold, driven largely by the JavaScript-dependent content
  • No MCP server card and no .well-known/verified.md: nothing to interact with, and nothing that proves the site is authentic
  • No x402 payment signals detected

Market context

Cloudflare measured AI crawlers fetching up to tens of thousands of pages for every visit they refer back (ClaudeBot about 38,000 to 1, July 2025 data). Assistants read constantly; they cite what they can parse. Source: Cloudflare, Aug 2025.
