Score history
Etsy is one of the largest marketplaces for handmade and vintage goods, and it was a launch partner of OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol in September 2025, putting its name behind the idea that AI agents should be able to browse and buy directly. That context makes its own site's posture toward scanners and agents worth checking against the stated ambition.
This is a partial report, and the reason is stark: HTTPS itself came back unreachable with a 403, and the homepage returned a 403 directly to the scanner's user agent, before any page-level checks could run. No sitemap was found at /sitemap.xml or referenced in robots.txt. There is no agents.md, llms.txt, or llms-full.txt. No MCP server card, no .well-known/verified.md, no sign of payment support. Four more checks, structured data, meta tags, content negotiation, and readability, could not be evaluated at all because the block came first. The only check that passed is robots.txt not explicitly blocking AI crawlers, which says nothing about what happens once a crawler tries to act on that permission. Said plainly: the site blocks scanners, and real AI agents attempting the same request are very likely blocked the same way.
For a company that put its name behind an agentic commerce standard, a storefront that returns a 403 to that exact class of visitor is the clearest possible gap between stated position and configured reality.
What Etsy gets right
- robots.txt does not explicitly block AI crawlers.
What is missing
- The homepage returns a 403 directly to the scanner's user agent, the same wall a real AI shopping agent would hit trying to browse Etsy.
- HTTPS itself is unreachable with a 403, before any page-level checks can even run.
- No sitemap found at /sitemap.xml or referenced in robots.txt, so crawlers have no map of Etsy's listings.
- No agents.md, llms.txt, or llms-full.txt, so nothing explains what Etsy is or how an agent should use it.
- No MCP server card and no .well-known/verified.md, so nothing verifies Etsy's identity to an agent or lets it interact with the site as a service.
- No sign of payment support for agent checkout, notable for a marketplace that co-launched an agentic payments standard.
- Structured data, meta tags, content negotiation, and readability could not be evaluated at all, because the 403 blocked the scanner before any of it could be checked.
