Score history
Shopify runs the storefronts behind a huge share of independent commerce, so its own corporate site is a reasonable proxy for how agent-ready the platform's thinking is, separate from what any individual merchant configures on their own store. Agents that are increasingly expected to browse and buy on a shopper's behalf will eventually need to read Shopify-powered pages the way they read anything else.
The scan found shopify.com serving a working llms.txt, a valid JSON-LD block on the homepage, a reachable sitemap, open robots.txt, and full meta tags. It falls just short of the readability threshold on text-to-markup ratio, and the scan flagged that key content only appears after JavaScript runs, meaning agents that do not execute scripts see less than a human visitor does. There is no agents.md, no llms-full.txt, no content negotiation for markdown, no MCP server card, and no .well-known/verified.md.
Shopify has clearly built for agent readiness in some places and not others. The llms.txt file suggests intent; the JavaScript dependency and missing identity signals suggest the corporate site has not caught up with what the platform enables for merchants.
What Shopify gets right
- Serves a working llms.txt with valid markdown
- Structured data: one valid JSON-LD block on the homepage
- Reachable sitemap.xml
- Clean HTTPS with forced HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect
- Full meta hygiene: title, description, and Open Graph tags present
- robots.txt does not block AI crawlers
What is missing
- No agents.md: assistants cannot read how shopify.com wants to be used, so they cite competitors who declare themselves
- No llms-full.txt: agents have to crawl page by page for full content
- No content negotiation: requesting markdown still returns raw HTML
- Key content loads only after JavaScript runs: agents that do not execute scripts see less of the page than a human does
- Content readability falls just short of threshold
- No MCP server card: agents can read shopify.com but cannot interact with it as a service
- No .well-known/verified.md: nothing proves shopify.com is who it says it is
- When agent checkout eventually arrives, no x402 payment signals were found, so a buyer's agent has no direct way to pay
